What is Neon?

Neon is a color that can be used to add a pop of vibrance to any design. It’s also a great way to draw attention to specific elements on your website or app. Use neon colors as highlights, outlines or even for a complete background. It’s important to remember that neon works best with high contrast between the colors and the background it is on.

Neon was first discovered in 1898 in Britain by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers while they were trying to separate argon from liquid nitrogen. They vaporized argon and the gas that resulted glowed reddish-orange when exposed to an electric current.

As a noble gas, neon is stable with a full octet of electrons and does not react with other elements. However, it can interact with some molecules and form excimers and molecular ions. These compounds are short-lived and must contain a neon atom with a full octet to form.

Unlike other noble gases, neon is an excellent refrigerant, with twice as much capacity as liquid helium and three times that of liquid hydrogen on a per-volume basis. It’s also a popular choice for creating signs because it’s very durable and has the lowest temperature range that causes the gas to glow at normal voltages and currents.

It is also the primary component in the luminous phosphor coating on cathode-ray tubes, such as television screens and computer monitors. It is also used to make high voltage indicators and combined with helium to create helium-neon lasers.
